Businesses Have a Talent Problem, Not Just a Technology Problem

Organizations invest millions into ERP systems to improve operational efficiency, financial visibility, inventory control, customer relationship management, and decision-making. Yet many companies still struggle with a different challenge: finding people with the right skills to implement and manage these systems.

Today, I had the opportunity to conduct a one-hour session for college students introducing ERP software, specifically Odoo ERP, and discussing its career opportunities and practical business applications.

The session included a live demonstration of Odoo ERP, real-world job openings, and a discussion about career paths within the ERP ecosystem.

What stood out to me wasn’t only the technology discussion.

It was something much larger.

It was the changing relationship between education, attention, and skills.

What is Odoo ERP?

Odoo ERP is an integrated business management platform that combines multiple business functions into a unified system. It includes modules such as Accounting, CRM, Sales, Inventory, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Human Resources, and Project Management.

Unlike isolated software systems, Odoo creates a centralized operational environment where data flows across departments, improving business visibility and process efficiency.

Why Businesses Continue Investing in ERP Talent

ERP is no longer restricted to large enterprises.

Small businesses, startups, manufacturing companies, retail organizations, hospitality chains, consulting firms, and financial service providers increasingly depend on ERP systems to manage operations.

When businesses adopt ERP, they do not simply buy software.

They require people who can:

  • Understand business workflows
  • Analyze operational gaps
  • Configure systems
  • Customize applications
  • Train users
  • Manage implementations
  • Support business growth initiatives

That creates demand. Real demand.

The Live Odoo Demonstration: Moving Beyond Theory

During the session, I demonstrated how Odoo connects multiple business functions within one platform.

Many students experience technology primarily as users.

ERP changes that perspective.

It allows students to see how organizations actually operate internally.

The One Question That Defined the Session

Interestingly, only one question emerged from the audience:

“What role can BCA students play in an Odoo career?”

My answer was straightforward.

BCA students certainly have opportunities in ERP.

But ERP careers are not limited to BCA students.

Career opportunities can exist for:

  • BCA graduates
  • B.Com graduates
  • MBA students
  • Engineering students
  • Computer Science students
  • Commerce professionals
  • Career switchers

Because ERP sits at the intersection of technology and business.

The Reality I Observed During the Session

The session itself went well.

The content was valuable. The live demonstration generated interest.

But the interaction level was limited.

Many students were focused on their phones during the session.

Perhaps there were infrastructure limitations. Perhaps there was no conference hall setup. I cannot say for certain.

But it reminded me of a different experience from my own college days.

Back then, if an external speaker or industry session happened, students would gather together in a conference room with curiosity and attention.

The room itself created an environment.

People came with the mindset to listen.

Today, access to information has become easier than ever.

Ironically, attention seems harder to capture than information itself.

The Larger Lesson: Skills Are Becoming the Real Currency

One point I emphasized repeatedly during the session was this:

Skills increasingly determine professional value.

Degrees still matter.

They can help open the first door.

They often remain important for entry-level opportunities and organizational requirements.

But long-term growth rarely depends only on a degree.

Businesses increasingly evaluate:

  • Problem-solving ability
  • Communication
  • Technical capability
  • Business understanding
  • Practical experience
  • Adaptability

The market does not simply reward certificates.

It rewards capability.

The Strategic Takeaway

ERP systems are growing because businesses are becoming more connected, more data-driven, and more process-oriented.

That growth creates opportunities.

Not only for developers.

Not only for commerce graduates.

Not only for BCA students.

For anyone willing to learn.

The real differentiator going forward may not be where someone studied.

It may be how consistently they build skills after they leave the classroom.
